First graders had a blast today during Grandfriends Day! Each student was able to create Valentine artwork and enjoy lunch and recess with their friend. As you can see by all the smiles, everyone had fun!

We find Mrs. Darveau during her third and first grade Anchor Times classes.
This week, first graders listened to a book about how to be kind. They then filled out a kindness rainbow listing four kind things they can do for others.
In third grade this week, students reviewed the topic of empathy with Mrs. Darveau. Then, in groups, they read ten different scenarios and discussed with their group partners whether or not they felt the empathy was being shown in each of those situations.
Be sure to tune in next week to see which Emerson specialist we will be visiting next!

Due to the police activity in the community, we are postponing Grandfriends Day for Emerson Kindergarten. Please stay tuned for the rescheduled date. Thank you for understanding.

We find Mrs. Darveau showing us the many roles she plays in our school as a counselor. Not only does she teach weekly Anchor Time classes, but she also co-leads StuCo, is in charge of Emerson's Crusader cart, and she often makes time to work with small groups of students!
Be sure to tune in Friday to see where we will find Mrs. Darveau next!

On today's episode of Eyewitness Emerson...
We find Mrs. Darveau teaching both fourth grade classes and kindergarten classes.
Fourth graders learned about peer pressure and the five questions to ask yourself if you are in a peer pressure situation.
1. Recognize peer pressure
2. Listen to your inner voice
3. Talk to someone outside the group
4. Imagine your parents can see you
5. Is it worth the risk
Kindergarteners practiced a calming strategy, listened to a story about kindness, and began coloring a kindness calendar. February is kindness month, so this will be an ongoing theme in most of her lessons.
Be sure to tune in throughout the week to see what Mrs. Darveau and our students will be learning next!

We find Mrs. Peterson working with a few of Emerson's kindergarten and first graders. Today, the kindergarteners practiced identifying lowercase letters and blending letter sounds to make words. The first graders also worked on letter sounds, writing vowels, and blending sounds to make words. These students are working very hard to become the best readers they can be!
Tune in next week to see which specialist we will be visiting next!

On today's episode of Eyewitness Emerson...
Today, Mrs. Peterson was able to do some one-on-one progress monitoring with a few Emerson students. When students are progress monitored, they are asked to read some nonsense words, some common words, and perhaps even a short passage. This year, we have a new software program that tracks student data in real time. With her iPad, Mrs. Peterson is able to see each student's ability level based on the results of each test.
Tune in on Friday to see what Mrs. Peterson will be up to next!

Emerson first graders colored pictures that will be attached to meals that are delivered through the Columbus Meals on Wheels program. Thank you Mrs. Warth for connecting us to this wonderful opportunity! We love helping our community!

We find Mrs. Peterson working some fourth graders. Today they reviewed three types of sentences (declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative), practiced some letter blend sounds, and read a story for comprehension. Such a busy day!
Tune in the rest of the week to see who Mrs. Peterson will be teaching next!

On this week's episode of Eyewitness Emerson...
We've moved on from classroom teachers, to specialist teachers! These teachers are "specialized" in certain subject areas, and focus on meeting the needs of our students.
In the following days, we will be visiting Mrs. Peterson's classroom.
Be sure to tune in to see what great things she does to help our students!

We want the PTO Sweet Harvest Popcorn Fundraiser to be as successful as possible!
The PTO decided, what better way to promote selling popcorn than to actually give some away to sample! We are adding a popping end to today/. Please enjoy a sample of the popcorn that your child is selling for this fundraiser. It is absolutely delicious and hits the spot for an after school snack! They can grab a snack bag (while supplies last) from our PTO cart after school is dismissed today, Wednesday, January 22 at 2:15. The cart will be at the front of the building.
(Note-produced n a facility that uses peanuts, milk & tree nuts)

Our Sweet Harvest Popcorn Fundraiser starts today and ends Friday, January 31st!
We are excited to sell delicious popcorn & raise money for our PTO so we can do awesome things, such as go on field trips, sponsor fun events, and raise money for a musical playground!
Ask your favorite Crusader for their order form so you can order some sweet treats and support Emerson!

Mr. Bates, and his class of fourth graders, learned how different structural shapes could withstand different pressures. Students were given spaghetti and marshmallows and told to build three three-dimensional shapes (triangle, square and rectangle). They then put those structures through a series of tests to see which structure was the strongest.
Tune in tomorrow to see what they will learn next!

On today's episode of Eyewitness Emerson...
We find Mr. Bates' fourth grade students on a 'dangerous adventure' involving alligators! Alligator angles that is. Students were able to practice differentiating obtuse, acute, and right angles in a fun game like way. The first partner to roll the dice and connect fifteen angles on their game board won!
