Columbus Public Schools recognizes the uncertainty and concern that has arrived with an executive order removing restrictions that prevented Immigration and Customs Enforcement from conducting investigations at sensitive locations, including schools. CPS is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all students and staff during the school day.

CPS has developed a plan to work collaboratively with parents and families who might be contacted by immigration agents while students are in attendance at school. CPS will follow its already established policies regarding access to students by outside agencies, the release of any information that would be protected under FERPA, and the notification of parents/guardians in these circumstances.  CPS does not collect immigration status information on students or parents.

It will continue to be safe to send students to school at CPS.

Parents who have questions or are in need of assistance should contact Centro Hispano located here in Columbus, NE.  They may be reached by calling 402-564-2110.

Dr. Kay has had dialogue with Governor Pillen’s office and Dr. Brian Maher, Nebraska Commissioner of Education to express concerns that a school building is not an appropriate location for this to occur and jeopardizes the safety and privacy of all students and staff.
