Columbus High School is excited to announce, pending board of education approval, the hiring of Coach Scott Schaefer as new Head Coach of the Discoverer Girls Basketball Program.  Scott is a Columbus native and graduated from Columbus High School (CHS).  Scott joins CHS bringing an affluence of experience and knowledge after recent stints at McPherson High School in Kansas where he posted 272 wins over 13 years.  Coach Schaefer took McPherson to 12 state tourney appearances, won four State Championships along with three runner-up finishes and two 4th place finishes.  In 2005 Coach Schaefer became the head coach at Gardner High School in Kansas and over the course of 9 seasons won 118 games.  In 2014 he took the helm at William Chrisman High School in Missouri and has accumulated 136 wins to date.  During these past 7 seasons his team has been a Sectional Champion, a District Champion and/or District Runner-up five times, won three Conference Championships and most recently a 4th Place finish at State.  Scott’s wife, Brenda will also be joining CHS as a teacher in the business department.

Tim Kwapnioski, Director of Athletics and Activities at Columbus High School believes that Coach Schaefer is an ideal fit for the Discoverer program, saying, “He spoke so passionately about player skill development and the implementation of his blueprint of a youth basketball program.  He is a very dedicated coach and will be a tremendous teacher of the game.  I am very excited about the future of the CHS girls basketball program and the opportunities for our athletes to develop from a coach who has accumulated over 600 wins as a head coach.”
