COLUMBUS, NE. – Columbus High’s Director of Athletics and Activities Tim Kwapnioski has announced the hiring of Matt Hoenk as the head coach of the Columbus Discoverers volleyball program. Matt is taking over for Jeri Otten.
“We are pleased and proud to have Matt taking over the CHS volleyball program,” said Kwapnioski. “He played a significant role as an assistant coach in helping the Discoverers win twenty-one games during the 2024 VB season. Although Matt may not have experience as a head VB coach, his ability to connect and develop players along with a tireless work ethic will be a hallmark of his efforts to maintain the level of success the Discoverers are accustomed to. We also look forward to Coach Hoenk putting his stamp on the program. We expect Matt to make a seamless transition to head coach and are excited about the future of our VB program with him at the helm.”
Over his short career, Matt has coached volleyball as an assistant at Lutheran High Northeast and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He was also the head wrestling coach in Ponca in 2022-2023. Matt graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science from Wayne State and is working towards his school administrative degree. Matt is a physical education and fitness instructor at Columbus High School. He also coaches wrestling at CMS and girls tennis for the Discoverers.
