At the recommendation of East Central District Health Department (ECDHD), Columbus Public School Buildings will remain closed, and we will begin extended learning on March 30th through April 30th. We do not take this decision lightly. However, our priority is the safety of our students, staff, and in this case the greater community. We plan to reassess the situation on April 16th prior to making any decisions beyond April 30th. We hope to be back in session May 1st, but please know that there is a possibility that we will continue with extended learning until the end of the year.
Education for students will continue and will take place in the form of packets and online learning that is currently being developed by our teachers and will be communicated with students and families at the end of the week. If you have questions in the meantime please contact your school’s building principal.
Other items that need to be communicated:
The FREE CPS lunch program (grab and go lunch and breakfast) will be available to ALL youth in the community. Parents and/or students can pick up their grab and go bags Monday -Thursday from 10am-1pm at any of the 7 CPS school buildings as well as from 11am-1pm in Duncan at the Village Hall. On Thursdays you will also pick up your meals for Friday.
All activities are postponed indefinitely. This means no practices, concerts, banquets etc.
Limited staff will be in school buildings each day.
All CPS buildings are closed to outside events and visitors. The only exception is for deliveries.
We greatly miss our students and staff. We are especially saddened by this news for the Class of 2020. No student’s senior year should include the adversity we have experienced this spring. Please know that we will do everything in our power, if it is safe to do so, to host prom, graduation and other important events that honor all of the hard work our seniors have put in being Discoverers. This is a true example of “Discovering Something Greater Than Yourself.” We will continue to work on alternative plans in case we are able to start back up in May. Please know that we will work tirelessly to help do whatever we can to make these final weeks of your high school career as special as possible.
We will get through this together and make the best of this tough situation. The Discoverer Way has equipped us to handle this adversity. We are strong, resilient and here for each other. As always “Wear your maroon proudly and Go Discoverers!”
Sincerely,
Dr. Loeffelholz
