The Columbus Public Schools Foundation continues to make a meaningful difference for students, staff, and the community it serves. Foundation President Bob Markham recently joined KLIR’s Riley Scott to share how the organization has grown and what’s ahead—including this year’s Discoverers of Distinction Banquet, set for April 10 at the Legion Club.

The Foundation, which began in 1985 primarily to manage scholarships, has since expanded significantly. “We’ve given back nearly $3.5 million in scholarships, classroom grants, and staff recognition since 1998,” Markham said. Today, CPSF offers around 25 scholarships to graduating seniors, as well as support for dual credit students and classroom innovation.

Markham credited much of the foundation’s success to careful financial stewardship and strong community support. “We’ve had great investment oversight and outstanding volunteers,” he noted. The Foundation also welcomes community contributions, from one-time donations to long-term legacy scholarships, many of which are created by alumni groups or families in honor of loved ones.

In addition to scholarships, CPSF sponsors events throughout the year, including Lighting of the Anchor, Discoverers Dash, staff recognition awards, and Honors Night. “We believe in recognizing both students and staff,” Markham said. “Our classroom grants and teacher of the year awards are a way of giving back to the people who make a difference every day.”

The Discoverers of Distinction Banquet — the district’s Academic Hall of Fame — will be held April 10 at the Legion Club, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. This year’s inductees are Fred Bellum (honorary), Jill Hoot Seidel (2003), Michael Floyd (1968), and Karen Blessing (1969). Tickets are available for $25 at cpsanchor.com or at the CPS Administration Building.

Markham also recognized the work of the CPSF board and staff, noting that the group’s shared passion for education continues to drive its mission. “It’s not just about the students — it’s lifelong learning, and we’re proud to support that.”
