Columbus Public Schools elementary counselors recently joined KLIR 101.1’s Riley Scott to discuss an exciting annual event—Fourth Grade Career Day. Each year, all CPS fourth graders visit Central Community College to explore potential career paths, meet local professionals, and experience a college campus firsthand.

The day is structured so that students rotate through different sessions, each focused on Nebraska’s six career clusters, where local professionals introduce them to various industries and job opportunities.

“It’s important for kids to see what Columbus has to offer,” said Tricia Romshek, school counselor at Centennial Elementary. “We work with area businesses to showcase different career paths, from two-year degrees to workforce training, so students understand that success can take many forms.”

Beyond career exploration, students also gain valuable experience of being on a college campus.

“A lot of our students have never been to a college before,” said Wendi Petersen, school counselor at West Park Elementary. “So beyond just learning about careers, it’s also about helping them realize that higher education is an option—right here in Columbus. They get to explore classrooms, see dorms, and get a feel for college life.”

This year’s event, held on March 18, will welcome dozens of community members who volunteer their time to present and engage with students.

“We’re grateful for our amazing sponsors who help make this day special,” said Ginger Darveau, school counselor at Emerson Elementary. “Each student gets a Class of 2033 T-shirt, reinforcing that graduation is the goal and their future is bright.”

As these young learners return to their classrooms, conversations about careers continue.

“We want them to walk away from this day inspired and excited about what’s possible,” Petersen said. “Maybe they’ll discover something new—something they never imagined before.”
