At 8:57 am on February 6, 2025 Superintendent Dr. Chip Kay was notified by the Columbus Police Department of an active investigation and search into a suspect related to a possible stabbing near Pawnee Park.
At that time it was decided to place West Park Elementary, Emerson Elementary, and the Kramer Education Center into a Secure status. Secure means return to inside the building, lock all exterior doors, nobody goes in or out of the building, increase situational awareness, and conduct business as usual inside the building.
At 9:30 am, based on the city wide emergency, all Columbus Public Schools facilities were placed into Secure status.
At 11:05 am, law enforcement updated CPS that the suspect is still at large, but was believed to not pose a threat to schools. A decision was made to stay in Secure until 12:00 pm and then move to a modified secure with personnel present at all entrances. There will be no recess or outdoor activities today. Students and staff will have normal release and arrival times / procedures. Buses are running accordingly this afternoon, there will be an additional adult (maintenance staff member) on board with the driver for additional security.
Parents who have concerns about their student leaving the building should contact that school’s office to communicate an alternate plan.
