“We were very fortunate to hire eight new teachers, including four who completed student teaching in our district and wanted to stay,” Dr. Kay said. He credited CPS staff for fostering a welcoming environment, emphasizing the importance of recruiting and retaining top talent in classrooms. Dr. Kay also encouraged community members to consider substitute opportunities, particularly as paraeducators, to support student learning during the busy winter months.

The conversation also touched on the district’s response to significant enrollment growth. With over 4,200 students currently enrolled, and more than 1,000 new housing units expected in the coming years, CPS is preparing for an influx of approximately 500 additional students by 2027. Dr. Kay shared that the district is exploring cost-effective solutions to address capacity challenges, especially in elementary and middle schools. “We need academic space, and addressing this need is our priority,” he stated.

Dr. Kay also announced the upcoming release of the CPS Annual Report, which includes data on demographics, enrollment, student achievement, and fiscal management. “It’s a great way for stakeholders to see the results of their investment in our schools,” he said. The report will be available on the district’s website and distributed locally.

With challenges on the horizon, Dr. Kay emphasized the importance of collaboration and community input to navigate the district’s growing pains successfully.
