When a district or school building announces that a building is in a lockdown or secure, what does that mean?
A lockdown is when students move away from doors and windows and get out of sight. They remain silent and do not open doors. A lockdown would be called if there was believed to be an intruder in the building, an active shooter, a hostage situation, a riot or a bomb threat. Entry into buildings during a lockdown is restricted.
Secure is when everyone returns to the inside of the building and all exterior doors are locked. The school day continues as usual with increased situational awareness. This is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the building. This could be an unknown person on the grounds, a dangerous animal on the grounds, criminal activity in the area, civil disobedience or other police activity in the area. Entry into buildings during a secure is restricted.
