Dr. Kay shared his insights into what has been a productive and smooth start to his leadership, including an emphasis on accessibility and community engagement.
“I’ve made it a priority to spend time in our school buildings, and I’ve visited about 85% of our classrooms,” Dr. Kay said. “It’s important to build relationships with the people making the biggest impact, and being present helps me understand what’s going well and what needs attention.”
During the conversation, Dr. Kay highlighted the success of Centennial Elementary’s recent Heritage Night, an event that brought in between 250 and 300 attendees, far exceeding expectations. The event celebrated the diverse backgrounds of students and families within the community, with contributions from local organizations such as Central Community College’s women's soccer team. Looking ahead, Dr. Kay encouraged the community to attend the upcoming CPS Elementary Forum, scheduled for November 6, at Kramer Education Center, 2410 16th Street, Suite C.
“We’ll be discussing the future of our elementary schools, housing development impacts, and class sizes,” Dr. Kay explained. He emphasized the importance of input from parents, grandparents, and other community members in shaping decisions for the district’s future.
Dr. Kay also touched on legislative issues currently under review that could affect education and how CPS will monitor developments to ensure positive outcomes for students and staff.
