On October 1st, Dr. Chip Kay, superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, joined KLIR (101.1 FM) radio host Riley Scott for a community spotlight segment. Listen Now!

During the interview, Dr. Kay provided an update on CPS's strategic planning, enrollment trends, and future programs.

Dr. Kay highlighted that CPS has seen stable enrollment numbers in recent years, with the high school reaching its largest-ever enrollment of over 1,350 students. However, a decrease in preschool numbers and varying elementary enrollment trends have prompted the district to examine possible solutions for future growth.

“We’re seeing some interesting trends with enrollment, and it’s crucial that we plan ahead to ensure we have the right space and programs for our students,” Dr. Kay said.

He outlined three potential options for addressing capacity at elementary schools, including boundary adjustments, expanding existing schools, or building a new elementary school in northeast Columbus.

In addition to enrollment, Dr. Kay emphasized the importance of CPS's recently developed strategic plan. The plan, which will guide the district for the next 3 to 5 years, focuses on four key pillars: enhancing programs for students, teacher recruitment and retention, maintaining and improving facilities, and increasing community and parent engagement.

“We believe these pillars will not only help Columbus Public Schools succeed in the next few years, but will also create a strong foundation for the next 10 to 20 years,” Dr. Kay said.

As part of the district’s commitment to providing well-rounded educational opportunities, we are exploring the addition of art and STEM programs at the elementary level, and expanding apprenticeship opportunities for high school seniors through partnerships with local industries.

A community forum is planned for early November to discuss the district’s future plans and gather feedback from parents and community members.
