The Family Learning program to support English Learners (EL) was created through a partnership between the Platte Valley Literacy Association (PVLA), Central Community College (CCC) Adult Education and Columbus Public Schools (CPS). Michelle Oppliger, CPS EL Coordinator said, “we are excited to continue this partnership as the Family Learning Program has provided an additional opportunity to connect with our families. Our goal for this program is to help improve school communication with our families as well as reduce student absenteeism.”
The Family Learning program started in September of 2023 as a pilot at Emerson Elementary. The purpose of the program is to give non-English-speaking parents the opportunity to be more involved with their child’s education while learning English. “It gives parents insight into what their children are learning in school, as well as provides a foundation and fosters relationships so that families are able to learn and grow in a new community together,” stated Jessica Wiig, Executive Director of PVLA. Learning a new language as an adult is challenging, but it is a goal that can be achieved. The ability to speak English provides confidence in helping their child(ren) with homework, interacting within the local community, and supports employment success.
In addition, the partnership with the PVLA exposes adult students in the Family Learning program to numerous organizations and services in the community. One hour each week is set aside for community presentations which have included the Columbus Police Department, Center for Survivors, the Department of Labor, and Columbus Area United Way among others.
“What’s amazing about the Family Learning program is that it’s truly a community partnership,” commented Jessica Wiig, executive director of the Platte Valley Literacy Association. “Because Columbus Public Schools has been willing to dedicate a space for classes and CCC Adult Education supplies the curriculum and instructor and community members speak to the students, this program has a true community feel, and we’re excited to see what the second semester will bring.”
At this time the Family Learning program is limited to non-English speaking families of Emerson Elementary students.
