westparkelementaryWest Park Elementary School is located in southwest Columbus, Nebraska, and is one of five elementary schools in the Columbus Public District.

West Park Elementary is a two-track school with an average of 265 students. We house two sections of grades K-5. Other services available to our students include: Title I Reading, Special Education, Speech, ESL, and School Counseling. West Park also has a Music Classroom, Media Center, Computer Lab and Gymnasium.

Based upon West Park’s Free and Reduced Lunch percentages, West Park is identified as a Schoolwide Title I Building. Title I supports reading by providing funding for staff development and intervention materials.

By becoming a Title I Schoolwide site, it allowed us to lower the pupil to teacher ratio when delivering direct reading instruction. It also allowed us to place more of our students at the correct level of difficulty, which enables them to work at their instructional level to optimize their learning.

In addition to the district-adopted Macmillan-McGraw Hill Reading series, West Park staff is supporting reading achievement through the use of additional instructional approaches used with individual or small groups of students. Such programs include: Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, Sound Partners, Scott Foresman Intervention, and Junior Great Books. Imagine Learning English, a web-based program for language acquisition, was implemented during the 09-10 school year for ELL and SPED students.

In addition to the district-adopted Saxon Math series, West Park staff supports math achievement through the use of The Problem Solver; a classroom-based approach to the acquisition of problem solving skills. Staff utilizes the L to J format to provide distributive practice and assessment on mathematical concepts contained in the state standards.

In collaboration with the Communities Together Can After School Program, after school care is available to West Park students. During this time, students are provided with academic support in the area of homework completion, basic skill practice, technology usage and enrichment. Each year, additional opportunities exist for collaboration between the school, individual classroom teachers, students, and program staff to enhance student achievement.

West Park’s staff is committed to Engage All Learners To Achieve Success!
